The Nigeria Police Force has commenced a fresh investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of singer Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, following a petition by his family.
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, approved the petition seeking a comprehensive review of the case, according to the family’s lawyer, Oladayo Ogungbe.
Ogungbe disclosed this in a statement dated September 29, 2026, amid clarification that the police investigation remains active despite the recent dismissal of a related suit by the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The lawyer said the Aloba family submitted its petition to the IGP on April 14, 2026, while the document was formally received at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, on May 7.
According to him, the family raised concerns about inconsistencies in the earlier investigation and requested a fresh forensic examination of the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death.
Following the IGP’s approval, the petition was forwarded to the Lagos State Police Command for further action.
The case was subsequently assigned to officers of the Special Enquiry Bureau, who have begun engaging with representatives of the deceased’s family.
“The family’s representative has since been invited and has engaged with the new team of investigators assigned to the matter,” Ogungbe said.
The fresh investigation comes three years after Mohbad died in Lagos at the age of 27 in September 2023.
His death generated widespread public concern and calls for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding it.
The family’s latest petition seeks, among other things, to address what it described as gaps and inconsistencies in the previous investigative process through a comprehensive forensic reconstruction.
The police have now begun examining the issues raised in the petition as the new investigation proceeds.
