The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared a total and indefinite strike across Lagos State-owned universities, citing the Lagos State Government’s failure to respond to its demands.
Chairman of the ASUU, Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) Branch, Murisiku Onigemo, disclosed this during an interview on Tuesday.
Onigemo said the union first wrote to the Lagos State Government in March 2026, presenting its demands and seeking the implementation of agreements reached between ASUU and the Federal Government in 2025.
According to him, the Ministry of Establishment, Training and Pensions responded at the time, stating that the government was working on the union’s demands.
“We first wrote to the Lagos State Government in March 2026, and the Ministry of Establishment, Training and Pensions responded that they were working on our demands based on the 2025 ASUU and Federal Government agreement.”
He said the union subsequently sent about seven additional letters to the government, but received no further response.
“Since then, we have written about seven other letters; none has been replied to till today.”
Onigemo said the lack of response eventually prompted ASUU to issue a 14-day ultimatum to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on August 31.
He explained that the ultimatum expired on September 13 without any concrete engagement from the government, leaving the union with no option but to commence industrial action.
Following the expiration of the ultimatum, ASUU branches across Lagos State University (LASU), LASUSTECH and Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) declared a total and indefinite strike.
The industrial action has also been joined by other staff unions, effectively grounding academic activities across the Lagos State-owned universities.
The unions are demanding action from the state government on issues they say remain unresolved, including the implementation of agreements and conditions affecting staff welfare and university operations.
Q: Are you sure that all the unions are on the same page as far this negotiation with the Lagos State government is concerned?
A: We are on the same page. No executive will take a stand. You will go back to your congress…
