The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has dismissed claims by the African Democratic Congress that the contract for the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is the most opaque contract awarded in Nigeria’s history.
Umahi, in a video addressing concerns over the project, dismissed reports that the Federal Government had abandoned the original alignment of the 750-kilometre highway in favour of the East-West Road.
The minister described the reports as misleading, insisting that the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway remained intact and that construction was progressing across several sections.
Umahi said construction was ongoing across several sections of the highway in Lagos, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Ogun and Ondo states, with varying levels of completion, while Section Two was expected to be ready by November.
The minister further disclosed that designers and surveyors were assessing the highway’s route through Edo, Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers states.

He maintained that the project’s alignment remained unchanged and could not be altered, adding that the highway was being implemented in line with President Bola Tinubu’s directive on the execution of major legacy projects. He said that the highway project remained on course, with construction ongoing across multiple sections.
Meanwhile, Bolaji Abdullahi, had questioned the transparency of the contract award, alleging that the public was not informed of the terms of agreement, contractual deliverables or whether competitive bidding was conducted.
Abdullahi also described the highway as the most expensive per kilometre road project in Nigeria’s history, arguing that the controversy surrounding its implementation reflected a disregard for procurement and transparency rules.
