The fifth edition of the Prof. Akin Oyebode Cup enters a decisive stage today, Wednesday, 14 October 2026, with semi-final matches at the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium, Ado-Ekiti. The women’s category also kicks off today, reinforcing the tournament’s commitment to inclusive participation and opportunities for young footballers across Ekiti State.
Phoenix Athletics Sports Limited has commended the quality of football, stakeholder support and growing scouting interest recorded in this year’s competition, organised under the theme “Building to Last.”
The tournament continues to provide a well-organised platform for young talents in Ekiti to showcase their abilities, develop confidence and attract opportunities for further development. Beyond the results on the pitch, it promotes discipline, teamwork and healthy competition among participating Local Football Councils.
Following the group-stage matches at Ikole Township Stadium, Ikole-Ekiti, the competition has moved to Oluyemi Kayode Stadium for the semi-finals and grand finale. The move provides a fitting setting for the closing stages of this landmark fifth edition.
Improved live-streaming has increased the competition’s visibility, allowing a wider audience to follow the matches and giving more scouts the opportunity to identify promising players. Alongside professional player profiling and the partnership with Afriskaut, the African football scouting and talent-identification platform, this expanded coverage is helping connect standout performers with clubs, academies and other development opportunities.
The commencement of the women’s category today adds another important dimension to the tournament, ensuring that young female footballers also have a competitive stage on which to demonstrate their talent and potential. The semi-finals will determine the finalists in both the male and female categories.
Preparations are also underway off the pitch. Through its continuing partnership with OWU Sportswear, the competition will once again feature a befitting ceremonial kit. The kit will be unveiled before the grand finale, adding to the identity and occasion of the fifth edition.
The finals will take place on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, at Oluyemi Kayode Stadium, Ado-Ekiti, a date specially chosen by the tournament’s sponsor, Hon. Akintunde Oyebode.
Phoenix Athletics Sports Limited expressed its appreciation to Hon. Oyebode and his family for their sustained support and commitment to youth development through football. It also acknowledged the contributions of participating teams, coaches, Local Football Councils, match officials, partners and supporters.
As the tournament approaches its conclusion, Phoenix Athletics Sports Limited invites football lovers and stakeholders to support the remaining matches and celebrate the talent, determination and promise of Ekiti’s young players.
