Netflix has secured broadcasting rights for the FIFA World Cup in Spain, with plans to combine live match coverage with studio programmes and free access to selected games.
The streaming platform said its coverage would include pre-match, half-time and post-match analysis designed for Spanish audiences, alongside live broadcasts of the tournament’s matches.
Netflix also plans to stream one match free of charge on each matchday in Spain. All matches involving the Spanish national team, as well as both semi-finals and the final, will be available free-to-air.
Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria said the agreement with FIFA was part of the company’s strategy to connect with audiences globally through major sporting events.
Bajaria said the World Cup had a unique ability to unite people, adding that Spain’s triumph in the tournament and the emotions surrounding it demonstrated how football moments could become part of a nation’s collective memory.
The partnership marks another step in Netflix’s expansion into live sports, as streaming platforms increasingly seek to attract viewers through major international competitions.
