Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany has been hospitalised after collapsing while watching the club’s second team train on Friday.
The 40-year-old had reportedly been suffering from a viral illness and missed Tuesday’s pre-match press conference ahead of Bayern’s UEFA Champions League clash against Arsenal. However, he returned to the touchline for Wednesday’s encounter.
In a statement, Bayern confirmed that Kompany received medical attention after collapsing during a training session involving the club’s reserve team.
“Vincent Kompany had to seek medical treatment on Friday after collapsing during training for FC Bayern’s amateurs,” the club said.
“The first-team coach had been watching the second team’s session.
“Kompany will undergo thorough examination in the hospital and remain in medical care.”
The German champions added that Kompany’s coaching staff would temporarily take charge of training and match operations while he receives treatment.
Bayern sporting director Max Eberl said the manager’s health remained the club’s priority, assuring him of the necessary medical care and support.
“Vincent Kompany’s health is our top priority. We at FC Bayern will do everything we can to ensure his speedy recovery,” Eberl said.
He added that the coaching team would assume Kompany’s responsibilities, expressing confidence in their ability to manage the squad during his absence.
Kompany’s hospitalisation comes ahead of Bayern’s Bundesliga fixture against Freiburg on Sunday. One of his assistants, Aaron Danks, had also handled the club’s pre-match press conference before the Arsenal game.
The former Manchester City and Belgium defender joined Bayern in May 2024 after leaving Burnley, succeeding Thomas Tuchel as head coach.
Despite Burnley’s relegation from the Premier League during his final season at the club, Kompany’s earlier achievement of guiding the Clarets to the Championship title in 2022–23 helped secure his appointment at the German giants.
Since taking charge, he has led Bayern to Bundesliga titles and guided the club to the semi-finals of the 2025–26 Champions League, where they were eliminated by eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain.
Bayern have not disclosed further details about Kompany’s condition as he remains under medical supervision.
