The Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals has directed its members across the country to prepare for a nationwide strike over unpaid allowances, outstanding salary adjustments and other entitlements.

The union is demanding the immediate payment of 19 months’ arrears of reviewed professional allowances and the implementation of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure adjustment.

The directive was contained in a communiqué issued after the union’s National Executive Council meeting held in Enugu State between October 21 and 22, 2026.

The union said the planned mobilisation followed the expiration of a two-week ultimatum issued by the Nigeria Labour Congress, with the support of the Trade Union Congress, on October 23.

It accused the Federal Government of failing to implement agreements reached with the Joint Health Sector Unions in February 2026, despite an earlier 84-day strike by JOHESU members.

The union warned that continued delays could trigger another round of industrial action, urging the government to fulfil its commitments to prevent further disruption in the health sector.

It also called for the payment of outstanding professional allowances, the inclusion of eligible health workers in call-duty allowances and the promotion of qualified professionals who have allegedly been denied career advancement.

On proposed legislative changes, the union urged the National Assembly to suspend consideration of the Health Sector Executive Amendment Bills 2026, insisting that the interests of allied health professionals must be adequately considered.

The union further expressed concern over reported attacks on health workers and Nigeria’s preparedness for the Ebola threat, calling for improved security in healthcare facilities and stronger disease surveillance.

It also urged President Bola Tinubu to reconstitute the boards and governing councils of federal health institutions and regulatory agencies.

To cushion the impact of rising living costs, the union called on the Federal Government to introduce hardship allowances, transport subsidies and tax relief for workers.
