The leadership of the Labour Party (LP) says it has not fixed a date for its next National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, which is expected to address issues concerning members allegedly involved in anti-party activities.
This was revealed by the party’s Deputy National Chairman, Ayo Olorunfemi, during an exclusive interview with Sunday PUNCH.
He noted that while the NEC is the appropriate forum to deliberate and take disciplinary action against erring chieftains, no timeline has been set yet for such a gathering.
The clarification comes on the heels of deepening tensions within the party following threats by a faction to expel its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi. Recall tht the threat was issued by factional National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, who accused Obi of acting against the interests of the party.
Arabambi had made the controversial statement last Tuesday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Morning Brief, claiming that Obi’s actions warranted expulsion.
However, Olorunfemi dismissed the threat as lacking legitimacy, emphasizing that only the NEC has the authority to make such consequential decisions.
