President Bola Tinubu is set to preside over a special session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Thursday, July 17, in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away earlier this week at the age of 83.
The session, scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Council Chambers of the State House in Abuja, will feature tributes from key government officials and stakeholders, according to presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga.
The special meeting will take place shortly after the third-day prayer for the late Buhari, which will be held at his Daura residence in Katsina State.
Vice-President Kashim Shettima is expected to lead a federal delegation, including cabinet ministers, to the Daura prayer session. Rabiu Ibrahim, spokesperson to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, confirmed this in a statement.
The expanded FEC gathering in Abuja will also be attended by prominent figures from all arms of government, including members of the National Assembly, judiciary, and representatives of Buhari’s family.
Further commemorative events have been planned: a special prayer session at the National Mosque in Abuja will hold on Friday, July 18, while a memorial church service is scheduled for Sunday, July 20.
Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and later as a two-term civilian president from 2015 to 2023, is being remembered across the country for his decades of service and influence on national politics.
