The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Oyo State says it has concluded all necessary arrangements for Saturday’s by-election in the Ibadan North Federal Constituency.
The Oyo State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Adeniran Tella, disclosed this in an interview with Adamimogo FM’s Dayo Olujobi at the commission’s Ibadan North office on Friday. He said distribution of election materials was ongoing, with representatives of political parties present to monitor the process.
Ibadan North Federal Constituency, one of the largest single local government constituencies in Oyo State, has 512 polling units and 272,196 registered voters. The seat became vacant following the death of the constituency’s representative, Prince Olaide Aderemi, popularly known as “Jagaban,” on July 10, 2024, after a brief illness at the age of 51.
Dr. Tella expressed confidence that the commission was fully prepared to conduct what he described as one of the best elections in the constituency’s history.
“With the level of our preparedness, I am optimistic that the exercise tomorrow will be one of the best ever in Ibadan North,” he said.
Oyo INEC Head, Voter Education and Publicity, Adeagbo Tailat, echoed the REC’s assurance, stating that the commission had fulfilled its obligations and urging voters to turn out en masse to elect their new representative.
Meanwhile, the Oyo State Secretary of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Nigeria, commended the distribution exercise, describing it as transparent and well-coordinated.
Out of the seven political parties that conducted primaries monitored by INEC, only five candidates were cleared to contest the seat in Saturday’s poll.
As voting begins tomorrow, all eyes will be on INEC to deliver a credible, transparent, and peaceful election in a constituency that holds significant political weight in Oyo State.
