The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of attempting to manipulate the party’s leadership ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The ADC spokesman, Bolaji Abdullahi in a statement claimed that powerful figures, including an APC governor are pressuring the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise Nafiu Bala Gombe as the party’s National Chairman.
He said attempting to impose Gombe, who was expelled for actions inconsistent with the party’s constitution, amounted to undermining the leadership, and structure of the opposition.
According to him, leadership of the party was formally transferred to the coalition led by Senator David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola in July 2025, a transition witnessed by INEC officials.
The Mark-led leadership was formally recognised by INEC in September 2025, and a Federal High Court recently dismissed a case challenging it.
The party described the alleged plot as a threat to democratic pluralism in Nigeria, warning that attempts to interfere in opposition party structures undermine citizens’ right to freely organise and support credible political alternatives.
The ADC called on party members, democratic institutions, and the public to disregard Gombe’s claims and reaffirmed its commitment to defending democracy.
