The Senate has confirmed Professor Joash Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, after undergoing screening and a voice vote by the lawmakers.
The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio had stated that the Office of the Inspector-General of Police and the department of secret service had cleared of any criminal records, which makes him eligible for the office.
During his screening, Amupitan assured he will carry out a general audit of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), especially the logistics for conduct of the 2023 general elections, to unravel the challenges of the electoral management body.
He also harped on the need for an electoral offences commission to help investigate and prosecute electoral offences.
Following his confirmation by the Senate, Amupitan will oversee preparations for upcoming off-cycle governorship elections and lay the groundwork for the 2027 general elections.
