The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured a decisive victory in the Rivers State local government elections, winning 20 out of the 23 local government areas contested on Saturday.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which holds power in the state under Governor Siminalayi Fubara, managed to win only three LGAs, marking a significant political upset.
In a surprising twist, Governor Fubara lost his own Opobo-Nkoro Local Government Area to the APC, further highlighting the ruling party’s struggles in the polls.
Announcing the results on Sunday at the commission’s headquarters along Aba Road, Port Harcourt, the Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Dr. Michael Odey, confirmed the APC’s sweeping victory.
The elections, which drew attention across the state due to heightened political tensions, were largely commended for their security arrangements, though there were isolated reports of intimidation and voter apathy.
