Argentina cruised past Nigeria with a dominant 4-0 victory on Wednesday, ending the Flying Eagles’ campaign at the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile.
The Round of 16 clash, played at the Estadio Nacional in Santiago, saw the South Americans avenge their 2-0 defeat to Nigeria at the same stage of the 2023 tournament, which they hosted.
The six time champions started strongly, with Alejo Sarco scoring just two minutes into the match. Maher Carrizo doubled the lead in the 23rd minute with a precise free-kick after Nasiru Salihu was fouled on the edge of the box. Nigeria’s appeals for a penalty moments later were dismissed after Ramirez appeared to bring down Salihu in the area.
Despite spirited attacking play from winger Oseer Achihi, who constantly troubled the Argentine defence with his crosses, Nigeria failed to convert their chances. Daniel Daga came close just before halftime, but goalkeeper Santino Barbi pulled off an impressive save to preserve Argentina’s 2-0 advantage.
Carrizo struck again in the 53rd minute following a swift Argentine counterattack, before substitute Matheus Silvetti sealed the rout in the 66th minute with a low drive past Nigerian goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt.
The result ends Nigeria’s hopes in Chile, with the Flying Eagles bowing out of the competition as two-time runners-up in the tournament’s history. Argentina, meanwhile, continue their chase for a record seventh title.
