The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will today begin congresses across its branches to determine its next line of action, even as the Federal Government meets to address the union’s long-standing demands.
At the centre of the talks is the implementation of the renegotiated 2009 FGN-ASUU agreement, which sparked nationwide protests in public universities on Tuesday.
Although the Bola Tinubu administration earlier this year released N50bn to offset earned academic allowances, ASUU insists that deeper issues remain unresolved. The union is pressing for improved salaries, better conditions of service, increased university funding, autonomy, and a review of laws guiding the National Universities Commission and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board.
Today’s meeting is expected to be attended by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa; the Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammadu Maigari Dingyadi; and officials of the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission.
Sources said discussions would seek to reconcile the Yayale Ahmed committee draft, concluded in December 2024, with the original 2009 agreement and subsequent recommendations, including the Nimi Briggs report.
