Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 general election, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has officially resigned from the opposition party.
His resignation was contained in a letter dated Monday, July 14, 2025, and addressed to the chairman of the PDP in Jada 1 ward, Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
The letter was made public on Wednesday by Atiku’s Special Assistant on Media, Abdul Rasheeth, via a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
“I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” the letter read in part.
Atiku went on to thank the PDP for the opportunities afforded him, including his two-term service as Nigeria’s Vice President and his emergence twice as the party’s presidential candidate.
“Serving two full terms as Vice President of Nigeria and being a presidential candidate twice has been one of the most significant chapters of my life,” he wrote.
Atiku’s resignation comes amid heightened political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
