At least nine Thai civilians have been confirmed dead following intense crossfire between Thai and Cambodian troops in a disputed border region.
The deadly exchange saw Cambodia accused of launching rockets into a Thai village and attacking a local hospital, triggering retaliation from Thai forces, including reported air strikes on Cambodian military positions.
In response to the violence, Thailand has taken the drastic step of closing its entire border with Cambodia and has urged all Thai nationals currently in the neighbouring country to return home immediately.
Meanwhile, Cambodia has announced a diplomatic downgrade in its relations with Bangkok, accusing the Thai government of deploying “excessive force” in the conflict.
The renewed hostilities are the most severe in recent years and come amid ongoing tensions over contested land and nationalist sentiments on both sides.
