The boxing community has rallied behind coach Lasisi Mayowa, affectionately known as Coach Mayor, by donating a total of N402,000 to aid his medical treatment, The PUNCH reports.

Mayowa, a revered figure in the boxing fraternity, is currently undergoing treatment for a severe kidney problem at the University College Hospital in Ibadan, after being transferred from the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja.

The outpouring of support from the boxing community and well-wishers across social media platforms has been remarkable.

Speaking from the hospital, Mayowa’s wife, Funmilayo, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support, while providing an update on Mayowa’s condition.

“He is getting better now and he was finally able to eat some food today (Thursday), although it was only pap and he didn’t finish the small meal, we thank God.”

Funmilayo told our correspondent that the reason they relocated Mayowa to Ibadan, Oyo State was because he was not receiving adequate attention in Lagos.

“We had to leave the hospital in Lagos because they couldn’t give us a date that we would meet with the doctor and his condition was getting worse there. So, we came to Ibadan and they have been attending to him. We did a test today (Thursday) and we will do another tomorrow (today) morning,” she said.

Expressing profound gratitude for the donations, Funmilayo added, “I want to thank and pray for everyone sending money to us; my family and I appreciate it. We have been seeing the contributions and I want to pray that their source shall never run dry. I am very grateful that they did not abandon me.”

More contributions can be made to the account of Lasisi Mayowa at GTBank, with the account number 0132024908, Funmilayo said.

Coach Mayowa, known for his contributions to boxing development, has groomed several boxers from his club in Lagos and was a pioneer member of the YUCATECO Boxing League. His children have also excelled in boxing, with his son and daughter winning medals at the 2023 National Youth Festival in Asaba, Delta State.
