The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed severe sanctions, including substantial fines and match bans, on the football federations of Senegal and Morocco following the incidents that marred the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final.
In a statement released Wednesday, CAF’s Disciplinary Board cited multiple breaches of its disciplinary code, including violations of the principles of fair play, loyalty, and integrity during and after the championship match.
Senegal’s football federation (FSF) received the heaviest financial penalties, totaling $615,000. This sum includes a $300,000 fine for the improper conduct of its supporters, another $300,000 for the unsporting behavior of players and technical staff, and an additional $15,000 for team misconduct related to five player cautions.
Individual sanctions were also significant. Senegal’s head coach, Pape Bouna Thiaw, was suspended for five official CAF matches and fined $100,000 for unsporting conduct and bringing the game into disrepute. Furthermore, key players Iliman Ndiaye and Ismaila Sarr each received two-match suspensions for their unsporting behavior towards the match official.
The Moroccan football federation (FRMF) also faced sanctions from the Disciplinary Board, though the specific details of its penalties were not immediately outlined in the initial summary. The suspended individuals are set to miss upcoming continental fixtures.
