Canada has announced plans to formally recognise a Palestinian state by September, making it the third G7 nation to take such a step in recent days, following similar declarations from France and the United Kingdom.
Prime Minister Mark Carney made the announcement recently stating that Canada’s recognition would be contingent on democratic reforms within the Palestinian Authority, including national elections scheduled for next year that exclude militant group Hamas.
According to.Carney, the decision will be formalised during the upcoming United Nations General Assembly. He also emphasized that Canada’s stance reflects growing concern over the expansion of Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in Gaza, and the lasting implications of the Hamas-led attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023.
“This is not a decision taken lightly,” Carney said. “It is rooted in our enduring commitment to peace, security, and a two-state solution.”
The announcement follows the UK’s declaration that it will also recognise a Palestinian state in September unless Israel meets specific conditions, including agreeing to a ceasefire.
Recall that France unveiled a similar plan just a week earlier.
