Continuing education, necessary tool for freedom, development – Delta monarch

A traditional ruler in Delta State, the Ovie of Idjerhe kingdom in Ethiope West Local Government Area, King Monday Obukowho Whiskey Udurhie I, has stressed “the imperative of continuing education,” insisting that it is “a needed impetus for self-emancipation and empowerment.”

The monarch who is a veteran journalist and media consultant gave the exhortation while speaking with journalists on the heels of his conferment with a degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Mass Communication by Delta State University, Abraka at the 2024 convocation ceremony of the institution.

The visibly elated monarch enjoined Nigerian journalists, in particular, to “keep on improving themselves, both professionally and academically.”

He averred, “This is highly desirable for media practitioners to further gain needed respect from the other estates of the realm.”

Recall that a total of 4,776 graduands were recently presented postgraduate degrees, first degrees and Diploma certificates by DELSU Vice Chancellor, Professor Andy Ogochukwu Egwunyenga, at the convocation ceremony for the 2022/2023 academic session.

The table showed that 99 graduands were conferred with Doctor of Philosophy, 522 with Masters’ degree, 109 with postgraduate diplomas, 3,611 graduands with first degrees and 435 with diplomas.

The ceremony also featured the conferment of the status of Professor Emeritus of Human Physiology of DELSU on Professor Chukwuemeka Peter Aloamaka, as well as conferment of Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa) of DELSU on Professor Sam Oyovbaire, immediate past Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the institution, who was also a former Minister of Information of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
