The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted a ₦200 million bail to the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, who is standing trial over alleged cybercrime charges.

In a ruling delivered on Tuesday, Justice Mohammed Umar ordered Sowore to provide two sureties before he can enjoy the bail. According to the court, one of the sureties must be a traditional ruler from Sowore’s community, while the second must own landed property in Abuja.

The prosecution was also directed to verify both sureties.

As part of the bail conditions, Justice Umar ordered Sowore to surrender his international passport to the Deputy Chief Registrar of the court pending the conclusion of the trial.

The judge subsequently released the defendant into the custody of his legal team and adjourned the matter until Monday, July 6, when Sowore is expected to begin presenting his defence.

Earlier this month, Justice Umar ordered Sowore’s remand at the Kuje Correctional Centre, pending the hearing and determination of his motion seeking a stay of the order revoking his earlier bail and the bench warrant issued against him.

The court also dismissed an application filed by Sowore requesting that Justice Umar recuse himself from the case over allegations of bias.

The Department of State Services (DSS) is prosecuting Sowore over allegations that he made false and defamatory claims against President Bola Tinubu.

According to the prosecution, the charges stem from posts published by Sowore on his X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook accounts, in which he allegedly referred to the President as “a criminal.”

The trial is scheduled to resume on Monday, July 6, when the defence is expected to open its case.

“There is no force on earth that can stop this revolution. We warned them, but they didn’t listen. I was granted ₦200 million bail. They have always been after my passport. When we get to that bridge, we will cross it.”
