A cyclist has died following a collision with a truck beneath the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) Bridge in Ikeja.
The Public Affairs officer of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday.
According to LASTMA, the accident occurred at the traffic signal corridor inward Airport Road, Ikeja, involving a DAF articulated truck and the cyclist.
Preliminary findings indicate that both the cyclist and the truck, advancing from the Maryland axis, attempted to negotiate the roundabout beneath the bridge simultaneously.
But the cyclist was violently crushed and succumbing to fatal injuries on the spot.
The truck driver involved has been apprehended pending further investigation.
In his reaction, Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa said the incident underscores the need for cyclists and commercial motorbike riders to prioritise safety and avoid highways and high-risk corridors.
Giwa reminded Lagosians that the state government has sustained extensive sensitisation campaigns, including jingles and documentaries, to educate cyclists, skateboard users, and other non-motorised transport operators on safer inner-road usage.
LASTMA reaffirmed the government’s commitment to road safety enforcement, public enlightenment, and the protection of all road users, urging motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians to obey traffic laws to prevent avoidable tragedies.
