Argentine forward Ángel Di María has offered his perspective on the enduring rivalry between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, drawing on his unique experience of having played alongside both legends at their peaks.
In an interview with AS from Argentina, the 37-year-old Rosario Central player was asked if Ronaldo’s famed work ethic left an impression on him. “Yes,” Di María affirmed.
“In terms of professionalism, Cris is definitely number one. His work ethic, his ability to stay at the top, and his constant drive to be the best while facing off against Leo were truly admirable.”
Di Maria acknowledged, however, that Ronaldo competed in “Messi’s time,” which made surpassing his compatriot exceptionally difficult.
He also contrasted their paths: “Cris was all about hard work and trying his best to be number one, but Messi, who would drink mate in the locker room, proved he had a special talent from God to be the best.”
Di María also noted Ronaldo’s remarkable longevity. At nearly 41, the Portuguese superstar is currently tied as the top scorer in the Saudi Pro League, with 16 goals in 16 games for Al-Nassr this season.
