The All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have traded sharp words over the outcome of the 2026 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections, offering contrasting interpretations of the results.
Felix Morka, APC National Publicity Secretary, described the outcome as a natural reflection of voters’ choices, arguing that the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike could not have influenced the election as alleged in some quarters.
In contrast, Ini Ememobong, PDP spokesman, warned that opposition parties may take a collective stance ahead of future elections and signalled the possibility of legal action over alleged irregularities.
In his submission, Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress chieftain, Atiku Abubakar, described the Nigerian political environment as being poisoned by intolerance, intimidation, and the systematic weakening of opposition voices.
Reacting to the FCT council election outcome, Atiku accused the APC-led government of pursuing policies that shrink democratic space, harass dissenters, and threaten alternative political viewpoints.
He warned that the steady erosion of participatory governance, if left unchecked, could inflict irreversible damage on the democratic fabric painstakingly built over decades.
Atiku called on opposition parties and democratic forces across the country to close ranks and forge a united front to safeguard the nation’s democracy.
Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the winners of the FCT Area Council elections as well as successful candidates in the Rivers and Kano by-elections, commending voters for participating in the democratic process.
