The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has debunked viral videos alleging police involvement in a shooting at the headquarters of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Garki II, Abuja, describing the reports as false and misleading.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, the command clarified that officers were only deployed to restore order following a distress call.
According to the police, the incident began around 7:00 a.m. on March 23, 2026, when about 300 individuals reportedly armed with dangerous weapons, including cutlasses, bottles, and bows, stormed the union’s premises and attempted to remove items.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, Isyaku Sharu, was said to have led a response team to the scene. Preliminary findings indicated that the group was trying to enforce a court order without the presence of authorised court officials, including sheriffs.
The situation escalated into violence when other members of the union resisted the move, resulting in a clash that left at least one person with severe machete injuries.
Meanwhile, the police confirmed that the court-reinstated NURTW National President, Ibikunle Baruwa, along with six others, has been arraigned in connection with the incident.
The command urged the public to disregard misleading content circulating online and rely on verified information from official sources.
