The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, a public holiday in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday in London, United Kingdom.
This holiday comes in addition to the seven days of national mourning earlier declared by President Bola Tinubu to pay tribute to Buhari’s legacy and service to the nation.
The announcement was made on Monday by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement issued by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani.
Tunji-Ojo stated that the holiday is a mark of national respect for Buhari’s dedication and contributions to Nigeria’s democracy, unity, and development.
“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation,” the statement read.
The government urged Nigerians to reflect on the former president’s legacy and uphold the values he stood for, particularly in public service and governance.
Buhari passed away after a brief illness at a private clinic in London. His remains were flown back to Nigeria on Sunday night and interred in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, on Monday in accordance with Islamic rites.
