Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, has travelled to the United Kingdom to seek medical attention.
This is according to.multiple sources as cconfirmed earlier on.
The report, initially published by Western Post, was later corroborated by insiders who revealed that the minister’s health condition had necessitated the trip. One source told The PUNCH that Edun had earlier considered seeking medical treatment abroad “if the need arises,” but the decision was eventually made this week.
“It’s true, he has left already,” the source confirmed, noting that the minister departed Abuja for Lagos on Monday evening aboard a commercial flight before connecting to London later that night on a British Airways flight.
Before his departure, officials at the Presidency had assured that the minister was recuperating at his Abuja residence under the supervision of Nigerian medical professionals.
Reliable sources, however, disclosed that Edun had been unwell in recent days, though they dismissed earlier rumours circulating on social media claiming that he had suffered a stroke or was incapacitated.
As of Tuesday, neither the Ministry of Finance nor the Presidency had issued an official statement regarding the minister’s condition or the duration of his stay in London.
Mr. Edun, who was appointed in August 2023, has been a key figure in President Bola Tinubu’s economic reform agenda, particularly in managing fiscal policy, tackling inflation, and stabilising the naira amid Nigeria’s ongoing economic challenges.
Observers say his temporary absence could momentarily affect some ongoing policy engagements, including negotiations with international financial institutions and domestic economic stakeholders.
However, senior officials at the finance ministry assured that administrative operations would continue seamlessly, adding that Edun had delegated key tasks to top officials before leaving the country.
