Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has urged collective efforts to protect education and strengthen the safety of schools across the country, describing the task as central to securing the nation’s future.
She made the call in her message marking the 2025 International Day to Protect Education from Attack, observed globally on Tuesday.
This year’s theme, “Challenging Narratives, Reshaping Action,” was described by the First Lady as a clarion call for bold measures to safeguard learning spaces.
“The theme calls us to move beyond words and take stronger action to safeguard education,” Mrs Tinubu said, stressing that the well-being of learners, teachers, and institutions must be prioritised.
A former teacher herself, Mrs Tinubu highlighted the urgency of the issue, warning that societies which failed to secure their schools risked eroding their future development and stability.
She called on government agencies, communities, and civil society to work together to strengthen security around schools, particularly in areas vulnerable to conflict and criminal attacks.
“Education must never be compromised,” she added. “We must rise as a nation to ensure that our children learn in environments that are safe, secure, and supportive.”
The International Day to Protect Education from Attack was established by the United Nations in 2020, following growing concerns over assaults on schools, abductions of students, and violence against teachers in conflict-affected regions.
