A prominent figure in Nigerian football administration has issued a stark warning, calling for a fundamental shift toward accountability within the country’s football governance structure.
In a statement released on LinkedIn on Friday, Bayo Olanlege, whose administrative experience includes building the Ekiti State Football Association, declared that the time for decisive action has arrived. He argued that accountability, which he defined as the obligation of individuals and institutions to take responsibility for their actions, must be urgently reinforced across the entire football ecosystem.
Olanlege’s call to action targets leadership at all levels, from Local Football Councils and State Football Associations to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). He emphasized that those in positions of authority must move beyond titles and status, insisting that “leadership in football administration demands tangible work, measurable impact, and a clear commitment to the growth and integrity of the game.”
Reflecting on his own development in the sport, Olanlege acknowledged the influence of distinguished mentors, including the late Chief Taiwo Joseph Ogunjobi, Taiwo Odebunmi, Seyi Akinwunmi, and current NFF President Ibrahim Gusau. He credited their guidance for shaping the principles of effective football governance that he later applied in building the Ekiti State Football Association.
However, Olanlege expressed concern that the current state of Nigerian football administration falls short of these standards. He noted a pressing need for reorientation among football leaders, stressing that administrators must be re-educated on their roles and the expectations of their offices.
“In its present state, the Nigerian football ecosystem is operating below its full potential,” Olanlege stated. He attributed the gap between current realities and what should be achievable to a lack of leadership effectiveness and institutional responsibility.
Olanlege maintained that accountability must become the cornerstone of administration to unlock the immense potential within our system and position the game for sustainable success.
