Armed men on Monday attacked a bank customer in Ibadan, Oyo State, dispossessing him of a large sum of money and injuring a police officer in the process.
The incident occurred around 8:00 a.m. in the Osuntokun area of Ibadan North Local Government, shortly after the victim reportedly withdrew money from a commercial bank.
Eyewitnesses said the assailants, who had trailed the victim from the bank, ambushed his vehicle, a metallic grey Nissan Primera with registration number EPE 901 PS and forcibly took an undisclosed amount of cash.
An eyewitness, who requested anonymity, said the victim was caught unawares by the attackers. “The unsuspecting man was robbed of a huge sum of money. A police officer who tried to intervene was badly injured during the attack,” she said.
Confirming the incident, the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, said in a statement that the attack took place along Secretariat Road, Agodi.
He explained that the police patrol team responded immediately but encountered the armed robbers in a confrontation that left one officer seriously wounded.
“Initial investigations indicate that an officer attached to the command sustained severe injuries during an exchange with the suspects while attempting to prevent further chaos following the robbery,” Osifeso stated.
He added that police operatives have since launched a manhunt for the attackers, vowing that those behind the crime will be brought to justice.
Security has been heightened in the area as authorities continue investigations into the incident.
