The ancient city of Ibadan came alive on Thursday as former Oyo State Governor and Olubadan-designate, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, marked his 81st birthday in grand style, just a day before his coronation as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.
Well-wishers, relatives, community leaders, and supporters thronged his family compound, near Mapo, to pay glowing tributes to the respected statesman. Many described him as a humble leader with an uncommon love for the people.
The atmosphere was festive as residents, traders, and market women joined in the celebration, dining and drinking to honour both his birthday and his imminent enthronement.
Speaking at the event, Chairman of the Real Born Association Elders’ Forum, Isale-Osi, Toafeek Kayode Agesin, described the day as historic for the people of Ibadan.
“We are celebrating two events together: the birthday of a former senator, former governor, and now Olubadan of Ibadanland, who clocks 81 years today. Baba is a special person; he loves the masses. He is humble, he is a leader, and he knows what the people need. The only thing we can do for him is to keep praying for him,” Agesin said.
Ladoja will be formally crowned as Olubadan on Friday at the historic Mapo Hall, in a ceremony expected to draw dignitaries from across Nigeria.
