The President-General of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes, Ajeniyi Ajewole, has said Ibadan has the potential to become a major economic hub in Nigeria if its resources are properly developed.
Ajewole made the remarks on Wednesday during a press conference held at Ibadan House in Oke Aremo, where activities for the grand finale of the 2026 Ibadan Cultural Festival were announced.
He said unlocking the city’s economic potential would create jobs for young people and increase internally generated revenue in Oyo State.
According to him, the cultural festival goes beyond celebration, serving as a platform to strengthen unity among indigenes and residents of the ancient city.
Ajewole also disclosed that four Nigerians have been shortlisted for honours at the grand finale of the festival. They include the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Ishaq Oloyede; Senator representing Oyo North, Abdulfatai Buhari; and the Vice-Chancellor of Abiola Ajimobi Technical University, Adesola Ajayi.
He said the individuals were selected in recognition of their contributions to national development and their impact on the growth of Ibadan.
Ajewole added that the festival is designed to showcase the cultural heritage of the city while attracting visitors and promoting Ibadan as a destination for economic and tourism opportunities.
