The ancient city of Ibadan is gearing up for a historic cultural celebration as the Olubadan-designate, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, will be crowned the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland on Friday, September 26, 2025.
The Olubadan Coronation Committee, chaired by former President-General of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII), Chief Bayo Oyero, unveiled a week-long programme of events after its inaugural meeting on Monday in Ibadan.
According to the state Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, the coronation festivities will commence on Monday, September 22, and culminate with the grand installation at Mapo Hall on September 26.
The schedule includes a mix of spiritual, cultural, and intellectual activities designed to showcase Ibadan’s rich heritage:
– Monday, Sept. 22: An interdenominational service at the Olubadan Palace, Oke Aremo, organised by the CCII.
– Tuesday, Sept. 23: A Cultural Day celebration in partnership with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, followed by a Coronation Lecture to be delivered by eminent historian Prof. Toyin Falola.
– Thursday, Sept. 25: A Mega Praise Worship event at the Civic Centre, Idi Ape.
– Friday, Sept. 26: The Grand Coronation of Oba Rashidi Ladoja at Mapo Hall.
The inaugural committee meeting drew a wide spectrum of stakeholders, including traditional rulers, political leaders, and community representatives.
Present were the Asipa Olubadan-designate, Oba Hamidu Ajibade, Chief Nureni Adisa, and the Olubadan’s Media Aide, Chief Adeola Oloko. Government officials in attendance included the Commissioners for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Hon. Demola Ojo; Culture and Tourism; Women Affairs; and Information.
Also present were council chairmen from Egbeda and Ibadan South-East (representing all 11 councils in Ibadanland), a lawmaker representing Ibadan South-East, the Governor’s Director-General of Protocol, and permanent secretaries from the Ministries of Protocol and Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters.
The Olubadan coronation is one of the most revered cultural events in Yorubaland, combining deep tradition with modern celebration.
