Enugu Rangers coach Fidelis Ilechukwu, 3SC coach Gbenga Ogunbote, Stanley Eguma of Rivers United and Niger Tornadoes gaffer Majin Mohammed have been nominated for the League Bloggers April Manager of The Month Award in the Nigeria Premier Football League.

The League Bloggers Award is an initiative of MatchRoom Sports & Media Ltd and has since 2009, been a platform where the efforts of top performers in Nigerian top flight are recognised.

In the month under review, Eguma led the table toppers to three wins in five matches against Sunshine Stars, Plateau United and Abia Warriors, scoring 10 goals in the process.

Ogunbote led 3SC to four wins, including an away win at Kano Pillars and their run of form which produced eight goals powered the Ibadan side from sixth in the table to third.

Rivers United coach, Stanley Eguma is also in the run with four three wins in four matches (one game lesser than the other contenders) while Majin Mohammed of Niger Tornadoes completes the coaches’ nomination thanks to his three wins in five matches which also included away win at Bendel Insurance. Mohammed’s team scored 11 goals in the process which is the most from any team handled by the four nominees.

In the players’ category, the current leading top scorer in the league, Sikiru Alimi of Remo Stars will contend with Rivers United’s Deputy Echeta, Sporting’s Junior Lokosa, Tornadoes’ Clinton Jephta, Akwa United’s Ubong Friday and Katsina United midfielder Michael Ibe.

Despite Akwa United’s poor run, Friday tops the nominees list with five goals in five matches, followed by Jeptha with four; Echeta, Lokosa, Alimi, and Ibe have three goals each.

Winners will be decided by a panel of Nigerian football experts and announced via LBA’s social media channels on Friday, May 10.

Five persons were confirmed to have been killed in attacks that occurred on Wednesday in two separate communities in Taraba State. The attacks took place in Gashaka and Wukari local government councils. While that of Gashaka that led to the killing of three persons occurred in Mayo-Sabere in Mai-Idanu ward, the Wukari incident which claimed two farmers, took place in the Rafin-Kada community. Those killed in Gashaka are Mallam Adamu Yahya, 70, Abdu Yahaya, 52 and Nuhu Yahya, 42. The identities of the two farmers could not be ascertained as of the time of filing this report. Wukari council chairman, Ismaila Dauda, who made the confirmation, told DAILY POST that the attack on the farmers was carried out by Tiv militias. “It is true; two persons were killed while working in their farms by Tiv militias. I pray God Almighty will grant them eternal rest and comfort us all in Jesus’ name,” he stated. While urging the people of the community to distance themselves from acts that would lead to reprisal attacks, the leadership of the council in collaboration with the security operatives, he said, were working round the clock to track down the militias. “May I seize this opportunity to appeal to all the good people of Wukari not to take laws into their hands and allow the security agencies to investigate this issue and come up with their findings,” he begged. Sources from Gashaka council, who spoke with our reporter, said apart from the three persons killed, several people also sustained various degrees of injuries. They also blamed the rangers of the Gumti National Park for the attack in Gashaka. Acting Police Public Relations Officer, Gambo Kwache confirmed the incidents. “It was confirmed that two persons were killed in Wukari and three in Gashaka,” he disclosed. The cases, according to her, “are still under investigation and efforts are on top gear to apprehend the culprits.”
