The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that eight political associations have successfully completed the initial stage of registration to become political parties, while six others were disqualified for failing to meet the commission’s requirements.
National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday.
Olumekun said the decision followed a review of the ongoing registration exercise during INEC’s regular meeting held on October 30, 2025, noting that progress was assessed since the last update on September 11.
According to the commission, 14 associations were pre-qualified to participate in the process, which began with a briefing on September 17. INEC had also launched a dedicated online portal to facilitate the submission of required documents, which remained open between September 18 and October 18.
“As of Saturday, October 19, 2025, eight out of the 14 pre-qualified associations successfully completed the upload of all necessary information and documentation,” the statement read in part.
While INEC did not disclose the names of the successful or disqualified associations, it stated that further verification would be conducted in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act before any of the groups could be formally registered as political parties.
The commission reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a transparent and credible registration process, stressing that only associations that meet all constitutional and legal criteria would be approved.
