The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has indicated that it will reassess the Electoral Act 2026 and adjust its schedule for the 2027 general elections where necessary to ensure full compliance with the law.
Mr Adedayo Oketola, Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan, disclosed that the commission would issue a revised timetable in response to concerns raised by political stakeholders. He did not specify when the updated schedule would be released but stressed that INEC remains committed to operating strictly within the legal framework.
Oketola made the clarification in an interview while responding to calls from several political parties demanding a fresh election timetable following the enactment of the new Electoral Act.
Party leaders argued that changes introduced by the amended law make a review of the existing schedule unavoidable. They noted that an updated timeline is crucial for organising primaries and other internal processes ahead of the polls.
INEC had earlier announced that presidential and National Assembly elections would be held on February 20, 2027, with governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections slated for March 6, 2027.
