The Lagos State Government has commenced an enumeration exercise for victims of the Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) House fire on Martins Street, Lagos Island, which occurred on Christmas Eve 2025.
LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu said the exercise will be coordinated in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
Oke-Osanyintolu said the exercise began today and will run until February 13, 2026, calling on those affected to participate in the documentation process.
According to him, the exercise aims to ensure proper recording of victims, plan for recovery, and provide follow-up support for survivors and families.
The Christmas Eve inferno razed the 25-storey commercial building, formerly known as GNI House, claiming at least 12 lives and causing extensive damage to surrounding properties.
Bodies recovered from the scene were documented and handed over to the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SHEMU) for forensic identification and dignified handling.
Officials stress that the enumeration is critical for recovery efforts, emphasizing that all affected individuals and their families should participate to facilitate support and aid planning.
The government and emergency management agencies continue to coordinate post-incident recovery activities, reinforcing their commitment to the welfare of victims and the broader Lagos Island community.
