Fresh details have emerged on the cause of the deadly fire at Afriland Tower on Lagos Island, with emergency officials revealing that smoke from a burning lithium battery inverter system was responsible for most of the fatalities.

Although some victims were resuscitated on the spot, others were rushed to hospitals. Within 48 hours of the incident, at least 10 people staff of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and United Capital Plc were confirmed dead.

An emergency responder, who requested anonymity, said the toxic smoke originated from the inverter system.

Afriland Properties’ Head of Marketing and Corporate Communications, Chukwunonso Okafor, confirmed in a statement on Tuesday that the fire started in the inverter room and spread rapidly through the building, including its emergency exits.
