The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a man identified as Lawal Faruq for allegedly setting his former lover, Omolola Hassan, ablaze after their relationship turned sour.
The shocking incident occurred at a military barracks in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, and has drawn public outrage over the growing wave of domestic violence in the country.
According to reports, the suspect, Faruq, and the victim had previously taken an oath never to part ways. However, their relationship reportedly broke down, leading to tensions between the two.
A counterinsurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, who shared details of the case on X (formerly Twitter), said the suspect became enraged after the breakup and resorted to a brutal act of revenge.
“The victim, Omolola Hassan, was reportedly doused with petrol and set on fire by the suspect, who was angered over the breakdown of their relationship,” Makama revealed.
Witnesses said military personnel stationed at the barracks quickly intervened, rescuing the victim and rushing her to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment. The suspect was subsequently arrested and handed over to the police.
Confirming the development, the spokesperson for the Oyo State Police Command said investigations have begun to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the attack.
