The Minister of Transportation, Senator Saidu Alkali, has officially resigned from President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet, becoming the third minister to step down ahead of the March 31 deadline for political appointees seeking elective office.
Alkali tendered his resignation on Tuesday evening after a meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa, according to the State House media office.
His departure comes amid widespread speculation that more cabinet members would follow suit. However, several ministers tipped to resign have opted to remain in their positions. Among them is the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, who dismissed reports of his resignation as fake news.
Confirming the development, Alkali’s Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Umar Jibril, quoted the outgoing minister as expressing gratitude to President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve.
“I am deeply honoured to have served in this capacity and remain grateful to Mr President for the confidence reposed in me,” Alkali said, adding that he is proud of the strides made in advancing Nigeria’s transportation sector.
