The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, has confirmed that Morocco will host the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2026 as originally planned.
Speaking after a CAF Executive Committee meeting in Dar es Salaam, Motsepe said the WAFCON will continue, as the football body continues to engage Morocco.
This decision marks the third consecutive time Morocco will host the competition, following the 2022 and 2024 editions.
Although South African officials had expressed a willingness to step in as a replacement host if necessary, CAF has remained committed to the Moroccan venue.
The 2026 tournament will feature an expanded 16-team format and will play a decisive role in determining which African teams advance to the global stage in 2027.
Meanwhile, CAF has expressed disappointment at the scenes that played out at the AFCON final in Morocco, describing it as an embarrasment that should never repeat itself.
According to Motsepe, the football body will review its disciplinary structures, rules and regulations to allow stiffer penalities for such incidents in the future.
On the subject of postponing the 2027 AFCON or relocating the tournament. the CAF boss announced that AFCON next year in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda is going to be successful, discrediting allegations that the tournament will be taken away because the three countries will not be ready.
