Nigerian comedian Freedom Okpetoritse Atsepoyi, popularly known as Mr Jollof, has addressed the altercation involving himself and social media critic VeryDarkMan aboard a United Nigeria Airlines flight, saying he acted purely in self-defence.
In an Instagram video posted on Tuesday, the comedian said he is not a violent person and regretted that the confrontation disrupted the travel plans of other passengers.
Mr Jollof tendered an unreserved apology to those onboard the aircraft, as well as to the National Civil Aviation Authority and United Nigeria Airlines, noting that the incident was unfortunate and avoidable.
“I want to sincerely apologise to the NCAA, United Nigeria Airlines, and all the passengers on that flight,” he said. “I only reacted to defend myself, and you all saw what happened. I’m sorry if I delayed your schedules. Please forgive me. This is not who I am, and it won’t happen again. To my wife and kids, I’m sorry—Daddy will do better.”
He maintained that he responded because he felt attacked, insisting that his actions were not premeditated.
The incident, which has drawn wide public attention, has prompted aviation authorities to consider possible sanctions for both men.
