The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has moved to clarify concerns following the voluntary global recall of certain batches of Nestlé’s SMA Infant Formula in over 50 countries, assuring Nigerians that products on the local market are safe.

In an official statement issued by its Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye, the Agency sought to reassure the public, healthcare professionals, and caregivers that all Nestlé Infant Formulas currently approved for sale in Nigeria are safe for consumption and are not included in the international recall.

The global action, led by Nestlé UK, was initiated as a precaution due to the potential presence of cereulide, a heat-resistant toxin produced by the bacterium *Bacillus cereus* that can cause nausea and vomiting, in specific batches manufactured in the UK.

NAFDAC confirmed that the SMA and NAN ranges of infant formula sold in Nigeria are manufactured at the Nestlé Tuas Factory in Singapore and are fully registered with the Agency.

“NAFDAC has verified and reiterates that the SMA and NAN range of infant formulae produced for the Nigerian market are not part of the affected batches involved in the voluntary and precautionary recall in other countries,” the statement read.
