Nigeria’s Christian community has been thrown into mourning following the passing of one of its most influential spiritual leaders, Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai, founder of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association.
The revered evangelist, teacher, and author passed away on October 6, 2025, at the age of 80, according to a statement released by his family on Monday. Describing his death as a “glorious transition,” the family said he departed peacefully after decades of tireless ministry and service to God and humanity.
“Daddy Uma Ukpai lived and finished strong. He was a faithful soldier of the cross who devoted his life to spreading the gospel with passion and integrity,” the family’s statement read. “His teachings, prophetic insights, and mentorship have left a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire believers for years to come.”
Dr. Ukpai’s name has long been synonymous with faith revival and evangelism in Nigeria. For over six decades, he led soul-winning crusades across the nation, impacting millions through his fiery preaching, miraculous healings, and practical teaching of the Word.
From the bustling cities of Lagos and Port Harcourt to the quiet corners of rural Nigeria, his ministry ignited faith and brought hope to countless hearts. Many recall his booming voice at open-air crusades, declaring messages of salvation, healing, and deliverance that drew crowds in their thousands.
Born in 1945 in Ohafia, Abia State, Uma Ukpai’s journey of faith began in his youth, following a personal encounter with Christ that shaped the course of his life. He would go on to establish the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association — a global outreach ministry dedicated to evangelism, leadership training, and humanitarian service.
Beyond the pulpit, Dr. Ukpai was known for his humility, compassion, and commitment to national unity. His interdenominational ministry cut across ethnic and religious divides, earning him respect as a unifying voice in the Nigerian church.
Throughout his lifetime, he raised and mentored generations of pastors and evangelists who continue to uphold his vision of taking the gospel “from the streets to the nations.” Many of his protégés today lead thriving ministries both in Nigeria and abroad.
As news of his death spread, tributes poured in from Christian leaders, political figures, and ordinary believers alike. Many described him as “a spiritual general,” “a father in faith,” and “a man who lived for the kingdom.”
Bishop Mike Okonkwo of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM) called him “a torchbearer who blazed the trail for modern evangelism in Nigeria,” while another clergyman remarked that “Dr. Ukpai was one of the last great revivalists of his generation.”
Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai is survived by his wife, Pastor Dr. Mrs. Philomena Uma Ukpai, their children, grandchildren, and the vast global family of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association.
