The cost of obtaining a Nigerian passport will rise sharply from September 1, 2025, following an official announcement by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).
In a statement released on Thursday by its spokesperson, ACI AS Akinlabi, the NIS confirmed that the 32-page passport with five-year validity will now cost N100,000, while the 64-page passport with 10-year validity will be priced at N200,000. The agency explained that the upward review affects only applications made within Nigeria, with fees for those applying from abroad remaining unchanged.
According to the NIS, the adjustment is aimed at preserving the quality and integrity of the Nigerian passport, which it described as one of the country’s most important national identity documents.
“In a bid to uphold the quality and integrity of the Nigerian passport, the Nigeria Immigration Service hereby announces an upward review of Nigerian Standard Passport fees, set to take effect on 1st September, 2025,” the statement read.
The Service stressed that the new pricing framework applies only to applications lodged within Nigeria. Nigerians living in the diaspora will continue to pay the existing rates of $150 for the 32-page, five-year passport and $230 for the 64-page, 10-year passport.
The announcement has already stirred discussions among Nigerians, many of whom have expressed concerns about affordability, given the country’s economic realities. For some, the jump represents a steep increase compared to the current rates, raising questions about accessibility for lower-income citizens who may find the new fees prohibitive.
Still, the Immigration Service insists the move is necessary to ensure sustainable service delivery. It reiterated its commitment to striking a balance between quality and accessibility, promising that the revision will help maintain high standards in passport production, security features, and overall service efficiency.
The new fee structure comes at a time when demand for passports remains high, driven by Nigerians seeking international travel for business, education, and relocation opportunities.
