About nine people have been killed and 25 others injured following related shootings at a secondary school and a nearby home in western Canada, authorities have confirmed.
Police said seven victims were fatally shot at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, while two additional bodies were discovered at a residence close to the campus. Officials have not yet released the names or ages of the victims.
The suspect was also found dead with what authorities described as a self-inflicted injury. Investigators said they have identified the attacker but have not disclosed the individual’s name or gender.
Earlier in the day, a shelter-in-place alert issued to residents described the suspect as a “female in a dress with brown hair.” Authorities have not clarified whether that description remains accurate.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was “devastated” by what he called “today’s horrific shootings,” announcing the suspension of a planned trip to Germany in response to the tragedy.
