Nigeria Labour Congress President, Joe Ajaero, says the government’s old pattern of managing industrial disputes through endless agreements, prolonged negotiations, and threats to unions is “over for good.”
Ajaero made the declaration while addressing journalists after a meeting with leaders of affiliated unions, stressing that workers in the tertiary education sector deserve more decisive action.
With the deadline for resolving outstanding issues expiring on Friday, NLC spokesperson Benson Upah told our correspondent that the Congress remained committed to maintaining peace on campuses, but warned that patience should not be mistaken for weakness.
“In our view, industrial harmony in tertiary institutions is essential, and we have stayed faithful to that principle,” he said. “But the responsibility to sustain that stability rests equally on the government. We expect meaningful engagement, not lip service.”
Upah added that the NLC would review the government’s response in the coming days before deciding its next line of action.
