The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has called for intensified stakeholder engagement to improve the welfare and remuneration of medical professionals across Nigeria.

Chairman of the NMA Oyo State Chapter, Dr. Happy Adedapo made this known on Tuesday during the 2025 Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference of the association. He expressed concern over what he described as the “dismal condition” of health workers in the country and urged for urgent dialogue between all stakeholders.

According to Dr. Adedapo, “It has become imperative for government and relevant authorities to proactively engage medical professionals if we must avert further disruption in healthcare delivery. Welfare issues must be addressed with sincerity and speed.”

The conference, themed “After the Final Rounds, Finding Fulfillment: Post-Retirement,” also focused on preparing medical professionals for life after service. Dr. Adedapo noted that the programme was designed not only to spotlight present challenges in the profession but to encourage doctors to begin early planning for retirement.

Notable stakeholders at the event included Professor Emmanuel Otolorin, a retired professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and Professor Olaitan Soyannwo, President of the Centre for Palliative Care Nigeria. Both speakers emphasised the importance of financial literacy, wellness, and future preparedness for medical practitioners.

Professor Soyannwo highlighted that, “Many health workers give their all during their careers but struggle post-retirement due to poor planning and neglect of personal well-being. This needs to change.”

Professor Otolorin also shared insights from his own career, urging younger colleagues to prioritise work-life balance and invest in their future beyond the hospital corridors.

The event was well-attended by stakeholders from across the health sector, security agencies, and representatives of the Oyo State Government. In their goodwill messages, government officials reaffirmed the state’s commitment to revitalising the health sector and supporting medical workers across board.
