The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has condemned the resignation of Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, labeling it a betrayal of the voters’ mandate and an abandonment of the political movement that brought him to power.
In a strongly-worded statement issued on Friday, NNPP National Publicity Secretary Ladipo Johnson expressed profound disappointment, rejecting the governor’s claim that his departure was due to an irredeemable crisis within the party as “baseless and an afterthought.”
“It is with profound anguish and deep disappointment that we received the news of the resignation and defection of His Excellency, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, from the NNPP,” the statement read.
Johnson emphasized that Yusuf was elected largely on the strength of his long-standing affiliation with the Kwankwasiyya Movement and the trust of Kano’s electorate. The party argued that by stepping down, Yusuf has betrayed the political legacy and popular movement that propelled him into office.
“By this action, he risks returning the state to the very forces that have long opposed its progress and the aspirations of its people,” the statement added.
